Impact of per second billing to Indian Telecom Industry
My own analysis on Tata Docomo's per second billing impact on indian telecom industry detailed below:
Background: Tata Docomo launched per second billing across country and it is proving to be a hit. This resulted in rate war and RCOM followed it up with 50p billing last week. Bharti, IDEA and vodafone are yet to react to it.
What does this mean to consumers: India is filled with pre paid customers like 80:20 ration to postpaid. People are price sensitive and can easily shift loyalties.
What does this mean to Industry: ARPUs are stagnating for the past 18 months and is around Rs.230-270 range. This could crash to 140-180 range if everyone follows suit on pricing.
What does this mean to vendors: Call center handles Rs.10 per call for telecom industry. Telecom players might ask the vendors to cut the price to Rs.2 to Rs.4 and can result in movement of call centers from metros to tier II cities.
IVR usage penetration might be made more user friendly. Managed services players will feel the heat as telecom majors might ask the vendors to handle calls at as low as 6paise to 11 paise.
Fresh capital expenditure will be put on hold and can impact switch players like CISCO, Avaya and vendors like Firstsource, Onmobile.
What does this mean to Employees: 12plus year experienced people segment was majorly active in telecom, realty, engineering. This segment is expected to feel the heat and salary cuts might happen shortly.
What does this mean to investors: Avoid telecom stocks until industry stabilises. Watch only ARPU as data point and not subscriber base.
Over all industry outlook: 2010 / 2011 will witness the character test of the industry. Some 3-4 Niche players might get wiped out and strong players would emerge as winners from the first ever major challenge of indian telecom industry.

Gods Must Be Crazy
Gods must be crazy series came long long time back. part one came in 1980 and part two came in 1989.
I managed to see both the series in DVD finally this week. It was a wonderful movie, full of innocence, fun, philosophy. n!xau's character was too good to imagine. Excellent one-liners like How do we divert ostrich, nice screen play and connecting various stories in between was a treat to watch.
I realise what kind of silly movies we end up watching nowadays like Pehlam 123, Ugly Truth etc... Come on hollywood, you can do a better job.

How do I listen to music
I get some privacy when i listen to an album for the first time. First listen is mostly on speakers. I listen to the tracks with an eye on track listing like who sang, who wrote the lyrics etc. Second and third listenening goes on ear phone. Second listen will be focussed on singing pattern, third listen focussed on music arrangement.
If i dont get a good impression within these three rounds of listening, i dont return the album again. If i started liking couple of tunes say out of five tracks, i listen to those filtered tracks again many times. By 6-9 listening, lyrics gets on to my mind. it helps me a lot in posting the lyrics in my blog too.
I prefer indian music even though i like all kinds of music. I was born and brought up in Mayiladuthurai / Mayuram, Tanjore district. We lived in Mahadhana Street where the temple procession used to be held every year. I used to walk along with god's procession when i was a kid and enjoy listening to Nadaswaram and that is how i am familiar with carnatic music like Mallari, Sakkani raja. So i I never curse any song which is based on carnatic raaga :).
I have good ear for music but sometimes i also get it wrong. Like the recent song Nanbanai paartha from ninaithale inikkum - thought it was a fabulous song and very very few people came to the blog in search of its lyrics.I know it was a hit in radios but not in web it seems.
A hit song gets you hooked on first listening. It has an impeccable punch which will make you to go back that song again and again. Example Chayya chayya, taxi taxi, hasili fisili, mala mala, sona sona to quote a few...
The tune, sound, flow gets on to the mind over the period. I can easily identify hundreds of songs from the staring music !!!
Have fun and keep listening to good songs:)

Abt Bharti - MTN Merger talks termination
Everyone thought Bharti and MTN would pull the deal through in the second time. But it wasnt meant to be.
Both the parties agreed to terminate the deal. We will never know what officially went wrong. Still, my guess was, MTN was too rigid on lot of things like dual listing, future head quarters of MTN etc.
What i like was the interest shown by South African government in the deal when compared to reactive approach of indian officials.
Bharti was the underperforming stock for the past 12-15 months due to falling market, still competition from other indian telecom operators, potential borrowing due to the acquisition.
Price of Bharti stock is unlikely to show substantial improvement due to number portability impact. I would say the price range of Bharti would be 410 - 485 until march 2010.
